Gemma O’Brien is an Australian artist and designer specialising in lettering, typography and illustration. Her work takes on a variety of forms, from calligraphic brushwork, illustrated letterforms and digital type, to large scale hand-painted murals. In addition to advertising commissions, gallery shows and speaking engagements, she hosts hand-lettering workshops around the world. A number of her projects have been recognised by the New York The Type Directors Club with Awards of Typographic Excellence. In her spare time she travels and draws puke puns on barf bags for the Spew Bag Challenge.

Volcom Art Loft
Gemma O’Brien was invited to paint a mural in the art loft of the Volcom Stone headquarters in Costa Mesa, California. It aimed to capture the energy, and creativity of the team of artists that work in the space.

“Fear Less” is a mural which was hand-drawn in the foyer of the Summit building as part of Gemma O’Brien’s artist residency at Powder Mountain. Over the next ten years, Summit is building an epicenter of innovation in the heart of Utah's Wasatch Mountains. This mural aimed to capture the entrepreneurial spirit of the people building it and those who will visit in the future.

Gemma O'Brien created a hand illustrated version of the word "Pure" for a double page spread in Issue 95 of Spanish magazine Lamono. The elements that made up the letterforms were drawn from found sticks, seeds and foliage collected from the Blue Mountains in Sydney.
